Roofing squares and bundles: how many do you need?
A roofing square is 100 sq ft of roof. Many shingles come 3 bundles per square, but some products need 4 or 5. How to work out the order, with waste.
Disclaimer: Cost figures are rough educational estimates. Actual roofing prices depend on location, labor, structure, permits, tear-off, pitch, and market conditions. Always obtain written quotes from licensed local contractors. This is not a bid or insurance appraisal.
Definitions
- Square: 100 square feet of roof surface (GAF).
- Bundle: a pack of shingles. Many architectural shingles cover a square in 3 bundles, but some heavier products need more; GAF lists Woodland at 4 and Grand Sequoia at 5 bundles per square. Always check the wrapper or the product data sheet.
Worked example
- Footprint 2,000 sq ft at 6/12 pitch: 2,000 × 1.118 = 2,236 sq ft.
- Squares: 2,236 ÷ 100 = 22.4.
- Add waste. GAF suggests about 10–15%, more on complex roofs: 22.4 × 1.10 = 24.6, round up to 25 squares.
- Bundles at 3 per square: 75 bundles.
Starter strips, hip and ridge caps are ordered separately.
